Five KGHM’s initiatives have been recognised in the latest edition of the report ‘Responsible Business in Poland. Good Practices’, prepared by the Responsible Business Forum. This is the latest edition of the report in which experts have recognised KGHM’s commitment to corporate social responsibility. The distinguished projects translate into concrete actions to benefit employees, local residents, education, health and the environment. Their inclusion in the report confirms that, for KGHM, social responsibility is an important part of its day-to-day operations and of building relationships with the wider community.
The report highlights KGHM's five practices: ‘Gift to celebrate the birth of a child’, campaigns promoting preventive health checks, ‘Copper Bees’, ‘Doughnut with a Noble Filling’ and the KGHM LAB pilot project. They all address the specific needs of people associated with KGHM and have a clear, practical dimension. These initiatives support employees’ families, encourage people to look after their health, foster volunteering, strengthen science education and promote environmental responsibility.
‘The best community projects are those that genuinely meet people’s needs and bring about visible results in their immediate surroundings. At KGHM, we are developing initiatives that support our employees and their families, encourage preventive healthcare, engage volunteers, promote education, and demonstrate that environmental responsibility begins with concrete local actions. The inclusion of five of our initiatives in the Responsible Business Forum’s report confirms that we are consistently building a model of social engagement based on cooperation, long-term thinking and responsibility towards the region in which we operate’, emphasises Tomasz Półgrabski, Director of the CSR Department at KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
Responsibility starts close to employees
One of the recognised initiatives is the ‘Gift to celebrate the birth of a child’ programme, run as part of the ‘Wonderful Parents KGHM’ campaign. It is a form of symbolic support for employees who have had a baby, and serves to emphasise the importance of family within the company’s organisational culture. Parents receive a package containing congratulations and gifts, including a congratulatory letter, a copper pendant on a silver chain, and practical accessories for the baby and parents. The programme has already covered more than 2,500 ‘Wonderful Parents’. The initiative was also continued in partnership with the city of Głogów, where parents of newborn residents were given the ‘Little Głogów Resident’s Album’ and a copper pendant on a silver chain from KGHM when they collected their child’s birth certificate.
‘Doughnut with a Noble Filling’ is one of the most recognisable employee volunteering initiatives at KGHM. For over a decade, the company’s staff have been coming together on Fat Thursday to support the treatment and rehabilitation of children from families linked to the copper mining community. Nearly 100 volunteers from all KGHM branches were involved in this year’s event; they organised the collection, set up collection points and encouraged staff to take part. The project demonstrates just how important workers’ solidarity is, and their willingness to help where it is most needed.
Health, the environment and education
Health prevention remains an important area of KGHM’s social activities. The company is involved in the ‘Pink October’ and ‘Movember’ campaigns, promoting regular check-ups and raising awareness of cancer prevention. As part of the ‘You matter, get screened’ campaign, female employees were able to have smear tests and mammograms at the Copper Health Centre, including during working hours and with transport provided. Nearly 400 screenings were carried out, and the programme was complemented by workshops on prevention, self-examination and healthy lifestyles.
“Copper Bees” combine activities aimed to support the local ecosystem with environmental education for children and young people. As part of the project, KGHM maintains 18 beehives at selected branches of the company. The initiative is accompanied by honey harvests and workshops run with the participation of beekeepers, during which the region’s youngest residents learn about the importance of bees to nature and discover how their everyday choices can help protect the environment.
This year’s list also includes the KGHM LAB pilot project, which is being carried out in three secondary schools in Lower Silesia. The programme focuses on setting up and upgrading chemistry and physics laboratories so that they better meet modern teaching needs. As part of this programme, funds have been allocated to local authorities for comprehensive refurbishments and specialist equipment for school laboratories. KGHM LAB supports the teaching of science subjects in a more practical and experience-based way, while also representing an investment in the quality of education and the region’s further development.
The Responsible Business Forum’s report ‘Responsible Business in Poland. Good Practices’ has for years been one of the most important reviews of corporate social responsibility, ESG and sustainable development initiatives. The inclusion of five of KGHM’s initiatives in this year’s edition confirms the company’s ongoing commitment to activities that bring tangible benefits to its employees, their families and the region’s residents. These projects are of practical significance, are developed in the immediate vicinity of KGHM and address important social, educational, health and environmental challenges.
