The heroine to become an ambassador

This 14-year old girl was the only person to help when one of the passengers travelling on a bus in Lubin got an epileptic seizure. The girl took care of the man until an ambulance arrived. She believes that she did what everyone should do in a situation like that. – I could not have reacted in a different way, just turn a blind eye and leave someone in need helpless – she explains.

In recognition of her courage

- Weronika has demonstrated extraordinary courage and, above all, a truly professional approach. We want to reward her for what she did – says Marek Bestrzyński, President of the KGHM’s Polish Copper Foundation. - We have asked her to become an ambassador of the “Your Five Minutes” project, under which we will educate junior high school students how to behave in similar situations. We believe that Weronika will be a paragon for young people.

- It is worth teaching first aid so that everyone is able to provide it. The earlier one starts, the better the results – says Weronika Szuszkiewicz. – My peers do not know how to behave when someone around needs help. They lack knowledge and skills. The project developed by the Foundation may change this.

The most important five minutes

 “Your Five Minutes. First aid training for junior high school students” is one of the flagship projects undertaken by the KGHM’s Polish Copper Foundation. The idea of the project is to disseminate knowledge on first aid in situations where human health and life are at danger. The pilot project will begin in the autumn. Four schools will be involved, including Junior High School No. 4 in Lubin, attended by Weronika Szuszkiewicz. More schools are to be included in the project in the next year of its implementation.

- We have developed the training program and its scope in cooperation with our partners: the Copper Health Center (MCZ) and the Mining and Smelter Emergency Rescue Unit. The classes will be run by nurses and rescuers assisted by a psychologist – says Paulina Czajowska, the project’s coordinator. – Our goal is to provide the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as draw young people’s attention to the needs of another person – she added.
