The program “Competent in the mining and metallurgy sector. KGHM - a key partner in vocational education” was launched in 2018 and has so far covered several thousand school students from the Legnica, Bolesławiec, Lubin, Głogów, and Polkowice districts. Students can get education in specialized fields such as underground miner of minerals other than coal, operator of processing machinery and equipment, metallurgical technician, and metallurgical industry technician, but also in more general vocations such as electrician, mechanic, and electromechanic.
Participants in the program can count on extensive support from the KGHM. Young people are gaining practical knowledge in modern workshops equipped by the KGHM. Students also have at their disposal a room imitating an adit, where they gain knowledge about steel structures under the watchful eye of their instructors. Students can do internships at KGHM branches and the best of them get a stipend. In addition, during the last school year such events were organized as “Competent Pogchamp” - a one-day sports contest and “Competent people explore the world” - a contest where the winners won an internship in the USA.
For students who are joining the program this year, the KGHM has prepared practical gadgets, such as flash drives and school supplies.
The “Competent in the mining and metallurgy sector” program involves close cooperation between the school and the KGHM. This allows for education that is in line with real business requirements and the latest developments in the copper industry. The program is constantly expanding and opening up to encompass new fields - it will soon include such vocations as IT technician and programing technician.
