Investments such as the Local Control Centre strengthen the competitiveness of the Polish economy and build modern infrastructure for industry. It is particularly satisfying that the project was carried out by Polish companies, confirming the importance of the local content principle in the implementation of key infrastructure projects. Today, a modern industrial railway is not just about transport, but also about digital technologies, safety and efficiency. The completion of this project demonstrates that Polish companies possess the expertise to conduct complex infrastructure projects at the highest global standard, emphasised Wojciech Balczun, Minister of State Assets.
The new Local Control Centre is an important step towards the digitalisation of rail traffic management for KGHM’s industrial operations. The launch of the facility marks the implementation of advanced technological solutions that enhance the system’s operational efficiency and streamline rail transport services. However, the significance of this project extends beyond the operational level, forming part of a wider process of modernising the logistics infrastructure supporting Polish industry. For KGHM, modern transport infrastructure is one of the cornerstones of a secure and stable supply chain, strengthening the Group’s logistics infrastructure and supporting the smooth running of its production operations.
For the KGHM Group, the Modern Local Control Centre represents an important step towards the digitalisation of industrial logistics and further improvements to rail transport safety. This investment increases the efficiency of operations at our branches, streamlines traffic management and strengthens the resilience of our logistics infrastructure, which is crucial for the continuity of Polska Miedź’s production activities, said Remigiusz Paszkiewicz, President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. This project demonstrates that Polish companies can successfully shape the future of modern industrial railways, and that local content is of strategic importance to KGHM. We actively support the development of domestic competencies, strengthen the supply chain and effectively implement investments that are vital to the functioning of the Polish economy, added President Paszkiewicz.
A key infrastructure investment
KGHM Railway Lines (formerly PMT LK) manages infrastructure of strategic importance for the continuity of operations on KGHM’s Main Technological Line. The efficient transport of key shipments of ore, concentrate and feedstock to the smelters – and thus the security of production and the stability of Polska Miedź’s supply chain – depends on the reliability of this infrastructure. The modernisation covered one of the most important parts of this system, approximately 34 km of track. The commissioning of the Local Control Centre and digital rail traffic control systems improves the efficiency of transport management, infrastructure capacity and transport safety. This investment can handle trains 600 metres long with an axle load of 22.5 t/axle, which increases the capacity and efficiency of raw material transport in the copper region. The investment strengthens KGHM’s logistical resilience for decades to come.
The completion of the ‘Rail Infrastructure Modernisation’ project is a historic moment for our company – we have ended three years of intensive work that is making a real difference to the quality of the railway infrastructure we manage. The modernisation of lines 971 and 971a, the construction of the Local Control Centre and the new digital Rail Traffic Control system will ensure safe and uninterrupted access to the infrastructure for carriers operating on KGHM Polska Miedź’s Main Technological Line. Today, our Company is entering a new era – we now have a modern, digital and fully automated infrastructure ready to handle rail transport for decades to come. The culmination of this investment is the change of the company’s name from PMT Linie Kolejowe to KGHM Linie Kolejowe, said Renata Krok, President of the Management Board of KGHM Linie Kolejowe (Railway Lines).
The ‘Rail Infrastructure Modernisation’ project is the largest investment in our company’s history, one which radically transforms the potential of the railway lines we manage – today we have a new Local Control Centre building. The system integrates 7 signal boxes, 177 point machines and 11 level crossing systems. The opening of the Local Control Centre marks the symbolic culmination of three years’ work by the Company’s team, contractors and supervisors – we have completed the project on schedule, whilst maintaining the continuity of supplies of raw materials for copper production. The completion of the ‘Rail Infrastructure Modernisation’ project is a springboard for our Company’s further development, which we will use wisely in the coming years, summarised Patryk Hałaczkiewicz, Vice President of KGHM Railway Lines.
The project required close cooperation between the teams responsible for technology and traffic management, thanks to which the work was conducted without any disruption to the logistics processes carried out for the KGHM Main Technological Line. This investment also reflects KGHM’s consistent commitment to the principle of local content, which is based on cooperation with domestic companies, strengthening local technological capabilities and building a stable supply chain. The main contractors for the project were the Polish companies Kombud and Torpol, which highlights the importance of domestic capacity in strategic infrastructure projects.
