The KGHM Family is growing - in December 2024, the number of Wonderful KGHM Parents already exceeded 2,000. The package for the 2,000th parent has just been collected by Marcin Wyka from the Głogów Copper Smelter.
2,000th Wonderful Parent
Marcin Wyka, who works at the P-3 department of the Electric Furnace and Converter Division, is an arc-resistance furnace operator for slag decoppering, and has also recently become a dad for the second time. He enrolled in the Wonderful Parents programme following the birth of his son, Aleksander.
‘Being a parent is one of the most wonderful yet challenging roles we get to play in life. I would like employees to feel our understanding and support in this challenge. Congratulations to our 2,000th dad. I wish both Mr. Marcin and all parents that this role brings them happiness and satisfaction, and above all that their children are healthy - because that is the most important thing for every parent’, said Andrzej Szydło, CEO of KGHM.
‘This is my second child, and looking after the family takes on yet another, new dimension. Receiving a gift on the occasion of the birth of a new family member is a nice distinction, as I don’t know any other companies that make such a gesture towards employees. The congratulations and these small gifts for the parents are certainly something special at a time when everyone in the family is busy with the birth of the child’, emphasises Marcin Wyka, the 2,000th Wonderful Parent.
Wonderful packages for Wonderful Parents
At KGHM, unique packages have been given to employees who have become parents for the past five years. In this period, 2,000 Wonderful Parents have already been gifted. In 2024, 400 people joined the programme, including 378 Wonderful Fathers and 22 Wonderful Mums. 406 Wonderful children were born, including as many as six pairs of twins.
The largest number of entries this year came from KGHM’s mining divisions. The Polkowice-Sieroszowice mine led the way in 2024, followed by the Rudna and Lubin mines. Among the most popular girls’ names chosen for Wonderful babies are Maja and Aleksandra, followed by Hanna. Among boys’ names, the top three are Nikodem, Tymon and Mikołaj.
A KGHM employee who has a baby can apply for participating in the programme and receive a gift set for a Wonderful Mum and Wonderful Dad. In a beautiful copper box there is a set with a copper pendant on a silver chain, a thermos for the parent, and for the baby a bodysuit and a cap or bib with the KGHM logo and a towel. The package also includes vouchers to businesses in the region, including discounts on beauty services, a family photography session and an invitation to the gym.
Socially Responsible Company
As a socially responsible company, KGHM supports many family-friendly projects intended not only for KGHM’s staff. KGHM’s Wonderful Parents programme, for example, inspired a similar action in Głogów, where the parents of each newborn child, at the reception of the birth certificate, receive gifts that include an ‘Album of a Little Głogów Resident’ from the city and a copper pendant on a silver chain from KGHM.
In addition to KGHM’s Wonderful Parents project, the Company, together with local governments, also promotes foster parenthood through a social campaign called ‘Having a Family’.
Meanwhile, as part of the KGHM Academy, the company supports preventive programmes for the Copper Belt's population. They improve parental skills and additionally involve caregivers and teachers in joint activities for the all-round development of their wards and students. This year’s activities included 25 editions of the Prevention Zone programme, 14 editions of the School for Parents and Educators, 5 editions of the Archipelago of Treasures programme and one edition each of the Star of Power and Leader100 programmes.
