According to the trip plan, the students spent a week living with families in Gaworzyce, attending the local school, learning about Polish culture, dishes and customs, and above all... making new friends with their peers from Poland. The guests from Chile unanimously admitted that they were very warmly welcomed by the families from Gaworzyce. One student, Antonia, admitted that "I would love to go back to Poland, mainly because of the greenery and the beautiful views".
KGHM, as a partner of the visit, organised, among other things, a visit to the Mine and Smelter Rescue Unit in Sobin. The students also visited the Żelazny Most reservoir.
The visit to Poland is one of the community-oriented projects run by the Chilean company Sierra Gorda SCM. The students met, among others: with Mirosław Kidoń, vice-president of the KGHM management board for foreign assets, who lived in Chile for 5 years and managed the Sierra Gorda mine.
– The strategy of supporting local people and good cooperation is applied to all our overseas projects. In Chile, we take special care of this because the Atacama desert, where we have a mine, is very demanding in terms of day-to-day operations. The support we provide to residents is particularly appreciated by local authorities. It is precisely such talented youth that we are hosting at KGHM today that will have an impact on the operation of our Chilean investment, which we expect to operate for at least 30 years. – said Mirosław Kidoń.
During the visit, Marek Makuch, director of human resources management at KGHM, admitted that he saw similarities in the projects implemented by Sierra Gorda SCM and KGHM:
– What is important is that both KGHM and Sierra Gorda see potential in the youth. In our case, as an employer, we reach out to young people through our flagship project "Competent in the Industry", encouraging secondary school students to train in professions relevant to the copper industry and, ultimately, to tie them to us professionally – said Marek Makuch.
Students from Chile now have the second part of their visit to Poland - visiting the largest Polish cities and their tourist attractions.
