KGHM joined the commune of Grębocice to create new green areas and care for the environment - the next compensatory tree-planting campaign of the year is behind us. The organisers, the local residents and the volunteers from KGHM's Hydrotechnical Plant planted 100 magnificent trees near Obiszów in the Copper Belt.
‘Our business is based on the principle of balancing our business development with the environment. The planting of trees in Obiszów is a partial implementation of our compensatory activities carried out in the areas occupied by the South Section of the Żelazny Most Mining Waste Neutralization Facility. As a socially and environmentally conscious and responsible company, we make every effort to fulfil the compensation obligation on time, despite the difficulties in finding several hundred hectares of land for planting. Together with the local government of Grębocice, we take care of our surroundings and set an example that caring for nature is our shared responsibility,’ said Zbigniew Bryja, Deputy CEO for Development at KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
Natural compensation - responsibility in practice
The trees planted during the campaign in Obiszów are 50 common hornbeams and 50 Himalayan birches, which were purchased and supplied by the KGHM Hydrotechnical Plant Division. In addition, as part of the event, the participants decorated the area by planting an additional 2,000 crocuses purchased by the Grębocice commune.
The event in Obiszów was not only an opportunity to integrate the local community, but also a further step towards the implementation of nature compensation. KGHM is committed to environmental sustainability in connection with its investments in the Copper Belt. The company is to carry out tree or shrub planting on areas totalling 331 ha. The company’s cooperation with local governments and communities is extremely important.
KGHM Forests - the green lungs of the region
KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. has been active for many years in afforestation of areas around its divisions. Last year, the company planted more than 400,000 trees and shrubs and now manages more than 212 ha of woodland. The trees planted as part of this initiative provide not only a natural air filter, but also shelter for numerous animal and plant species, enriching the biodiversity of the Copper Belt.
Ecology on the positive side
Ecology is one of the pillars of KGHM's activities. The company is constantly striving to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 with a number of environmentally friendly projects. Through constant monitoring of local ecosystems and programmes to protect endangered species, KGHM conducts its operations with respect for the environment.
KGHM carries out plantings, not only as part of nature compensation. In April this year, a tree-planting campaign was organised by employees of the Głogów Copper Smelter. New oak, beech and pine tree seedlings are already growing in the woodland around this division of the company. The pine trees planted today represent the young generation of the forest, which in the future will provide the oxygen needed by one and a half thousand inhabitants and absorb more than 30,000 kg of CO2. At the same time, the forest will be a refuge for numerous species of animals and a habitat for a rich flora.
