The arena was built in just over a dozen months - the first machines entered the construction site as recently as December 2021. Currently, the final acceptance inspections are underway, which will be followed by the official opening of the facility. The arena is eagerly awaited by athletes from the Copper Belt, Lower Silesia, and other parts of Poland.
The investment, which cost more than PLN 66 million, was made possible thanks to the funds provided by the Ministry of Sport and Tourism, the local government of the Lower Silesian province, and the municipality of Wrocław. Now KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. has become involved in its operations, becoming the naming rights sponsor of the arena.
“The KGHM Ślęza Arena combines all the best in sports. A team of people gathered around a good idea has created a place that I am convinced will become a showcase of Lower Silesia and all of Poland. Solutions for athletes that are innovative on a European scale and willingness to cooperate will ensure that the best athletes will practice here and new talents will be born under their wings. KGHM is becoming a part of this team and, referring to the company’s strategy, will bring new energy that will result in more victories. The Wrocław arena is the most modern facility in the country and one of the best in Europe,” said Tomasz Zdzikot, the CEO of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
“The last few months have been an intense time for us, with a lot of things going on. We are coming close to a time when we will harvest the first fruits of this work. The results are really impressive, and I’m very happy that they earned the trust of such a big company as KGHM. The agreement that was signed is the best proof that we are creating something really great in Wrocław. This will give us the impetus to continue our work and achieve great results for both the sponsor and the club,” said Katarzyna Ziobro, president of Ślęza Wrocław, about the agreement.
The event was attended by Agnieszka Winnik-Kalemba, the Chairperson of the Supervisory Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
The new sports arena in Wrocław differs from other such facilities in Poland due to the solutions implemented there. Also, only a few such facilities in Europe have the same solutions as KGHM Ślęza Arena in Wrocław. Only there will representatives of almost every discipline of athletics be able to practice in comfortable conditions all year round.
The main advantage of KGHM Ślęza Arena, which sets it apart from other such facilities, is the throwing practice area. An indoor long throw and shot put training area is available to athletes. Athletes will be able to train their muscle memory, analyze their throwing form, and fine-tune every detail of their practice, no matter how small. All this will allow them to practice in comfort, regardless of the weather, without having to travel far.
The designers also took care of runners and jumpers. The facility has been paved with Mondo, the most advanced multifunctional surface system. It is a guarantee of quality that ensures that the athletes will not lose even a millisecond while moving around KGHM Ślęza Arena. Innovative solutions mean that the ground further propels the athlete after taking a step, thus improving his or her performance.
Another extremely important issue is the thoughtful use of space in the facility. Athletic functions such as the sprint track and the long and high jump pits have been duplicated and relocated outside the circumferential running track. KGHM Ślęza Arena has been designed so that all activities, regardless of the discipline, take place without interfering with each other. This will maximize the potential of the arena - both athletes practicing athletics and team sport players will be able to use it at the same time.
The official opening of the arena is scheduled for the summer months this year. In the fall, when the indoor season begins, KGHM Ślęza Arena will be operating at full capacity.
KGHM Polska Miedź S. A. has been a patron of Polish sports for years. The company offers patronage of major events at local, national, and international levels alike (e.g. Bieg Piastów in Jakuszyce). KGHM supports athletes from various disciplines: soccer (Zagłębie Lubin), volleyball, handball, basketball, fencing, rowing, and winter sports. Another example of KGHM’s is the “Copper Rivalry” scholarship program, which supports the development of young athletes on their path to a professional career.
