In 2025 there will be an anniversary: 1000 years of the coronation of the first king of Poland, Bolesław the Brave. The monarch was also associated with Głogów. It was thanks to Bolesław the Brave that the chronicles in 1010 first recorded the name Głogów ("urbs Glogua"). The chronicler Thietmar, Bishop of Merseburg, described the invasion of Poland by German armies, which also reached Głogów in 1010. Due to the fact that the medieval city was strongly fortified and had a large garrison commanded by Bolesław the Brave, the German Emperor Henry II refrained from besieging the city.
– KGHM is a recognized patron of culture and is very much involved in projects related to the history of our homeland, both locally and nationwide. The initiative to build a monument in Głogów fits perfectly into the activities of the copper company. Being part of this project is a huge privilege for KGHM. The monument will be the pride of the people of Głogów," said Alan Steinbarth, chief corporate governance officer of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
The initiator of the project is the Pogoń Lwów Foundation. As part of the investment, in addition to the construction of the monument, the development of the space is planned, including the creation of an educational historical path in the vicinity of the Głogów Collegiate Church.
– We want to emphasize the role of Głogów in the history of Poland, but also to educate young generations. The legacy of Bolesław the Brave is the foundation of our national identity. The monument will serve as a reminder of our roots and the historical path will reinforce Głogów's role in our history," added Przemysław Bożek, president of the Legnica Special Economic Zone.
The letter of intent assumes activities for the construction of a monument to Bolesław the Brave, as well as the development of the surrounding area. The collegiate parish of Głogów will provide the site for the monument. In turn, Głogów will carry out the formal and legal processes and will also participate financially in this project. The Pogoń Lwów Foundation and the Museum of Archaeology and History pledge their support and participation in the competition committee for the selection of the monument project for which the Legnica Special Economic Zone will fund the prize.
