- Our business is closely linked to the environment, so it is not without reason that ecology is among KGHM's strategic areas. For years, we have been taking care to ensure that the impact of our activities on the environment is as small as possible and that our production respects the principles of sustainable development. Each year we spend hundreds of millions of PLN on pro-environmental investments, implementing the world's best solutions. Last year alone, we invested nearly a quarter of a billion PLN in this way. This is a major support for the protection of the environment in which we all live. We are also committed to increasing environmental awareness, and now we have a partner that has been recognised for years in these ambitious aims: The League for Nature Protection," said Tomasz Zdzikot, President of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.
- More and more people are paying attention to nature and the environment in which we live. At the same time, not everyone can count on reliable knowledge and education in this area. We see the need for joint action to promote pro-environmental attitudes, to disseminate knowledge on environmental protection and to engage in initiatives to care for the state of nature. KGHM is a national champion, the leader of the Polish economy, and such a partner is an opportunity for effective action," admitted Paweł Sałek, Chairman of the Management Board of the League for Nature Protection.
TOGETHER FOR NATURE
KGHM and LNP have committed to joint activities in the area of broadly understood environmental policy and nature and ecological education. The plans include educational and training cooperation, co-organisation of events and promotional and educational projects for environmental protection and ecology. The copper giant and the League for Nature Protection will be able to jointly organise, among other things, meetings and workshops for schools, tree planting campaigns or the development of flower meadows.
#ECOLOGY EMBEDDED IN THE STRATEGY
Ecology is one of the strategic areas of KGHM. The Company develops its business based on innovative, low-emission technologies in accordance with the principles of the Closed Circuit Economy. It has included its goals and ambitions in its Environmental Policy and Climate Policy, in which it has declared the achievement of climate neutrality by 2050.
Polska Miedź invests in the best available environmental techniques (BAT), conducts business activities with the highest possible environmental neutrality of production processes. It systematically invests in environmental protection installations and modernises the existing ones. Last year alone, the Company spent around PLN 250 million on environmental investments. Among other things, this year saw the commissioning of the Post-Process Gas Treatment Plant at the Legnica smelter, which practically completely purifies gases from mercury and arsenic.
Proof of sustainable production is, inter alia, the environmental footprint of KGHM's products - lower than the global average, and its place among 28 companies from around the world awarded the Copper Mark - a certificate confirming high requirements in terms of independently verified responsible production practices and positive contribution to sustainable development, related, inter alia, to environmental protection, the metal supply chain, working conditions, risk management practices or cooperation with local communities.
In addition, KGHM actively supports pro-environmental initiatives, including those not directly related to business activities. Amongst others, the Miedziowe Pszczoły (Copper Bees) project has been launched, which promotes beekeeping and involves the construction of apiaries on green areas around the divisions of KGHM. Falcons have been nesting on the "Koniczynka" chimney of the Głogów smelter for years, and a total of 45 chicks have already been ringed. This is an impressive result, especially as there are currently only 100 pairs of peregrine falcons in Poland.
