KGHM Rescue Unit for the safety of Głogów County residents

Friday, 11 July, 2025
The KGHM Mining and Metallurgical Rescue Unit has entered into a close cooperation agreement with the Volunteer Fire Brigades in the Głogów County. This agreement covers the organisation of joint exercises, demonstrations and drills in the field of rescue and infrastructure protection in the Głogów County and the copper company's premises.

Cooperation is key to ensuring safety

The cooperation between the KGHM Rescue Unit and the Volunteer Fire Brigades from the Głogów County covers a range of activities. Depending on the forces and resources available at a given moment, KGHM's emergency services will cooperate, for example, in the aftermath of disasters, landslides and other local hazards requiring the use of specialised equipment and rescue techniques.

'The KGHM Rescue Unit has already signed similar agreements with the State Fire Service brigades in Głogów, Polkowice, Lubin and Legnica. Today, we are taking another step forward and signing an agreement with all the Volunteer Fire Brigades from the Głogów County, which are part of the national firefighting and rescue system. I am convinced that our cooperation will increase the level of safety not only for KGHM employees, but also for all residents of the Głogów County,' said Marcin Górski, General Director of the KGHM Mining and Metallurgical Rescue Unit.

Joint exercises, demonstrations and manoeuvres

The agreement covers the organisation of joint exercises, demonstrations and manoeuvres in the field of rescue and infrastructure protection in the Głogów County and KGHM Polska Miedź S.A. In addition, the KGHM Rescue Unit and Volunteer Fire Department units/brigades will exchange experiences in assessing the suitability of rescue equipment.

The Volunteer Fire Department units have declared their support in emergency situations threatening life, health, the environment and property caused by fire, natural disasters or other local hazards. To implement the agreement, the Volunteer Fire Department units and the KGHM Mining and Metallurgical Rescue Unit will delegate forces and resources in accordance with the actual situation, which are in their possession and at their disposal.

KGHM Rescue Unit among the best rescue teams

The Mining and Metallurgical Rescue Unit is part of KGHM. Three departments operating at the Głogów Copper Smelter and Refinery, the Lubin Mining Plant and the Legnica Copper Smelter and Refinery form the structure of the KGHM fire brigade. This year, the teams took part in firefighting and hazard response operations, as well as in training, preventive inspections and preventive measures carried out at KGHM sites. Due to the specific nature of the technological process, over 30,000 gas concentration measurements were also taken at the smelters. The KGHM Mining and Metallurgical Rescue Unit has been recognised as one of the best units in the country for many years. The team regularly takes podium places in the National Mountain Rescue Competition. The high competence of our rescuers is not only due to their excellent training and commitment to others. It is also the result of KGHM's strategic investments in the health and safety of its employees, who know that they are looked after by the best when they go to work.

Modern Medical and High Altitude Training Centre

In February this year, KGHM opened a modern Medical and High Altitude Training Centre that meets the highest global standards in rescue training. This has provided the Centre's team with space to develop and strengthen its competences.
