KGHM in the Odra river Transport Route

Monday, 25 September, 2023

KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., KGHM Metraco S.A. and GRUPA AZOTY ZAKŁADY AZOTOWE KĘDZIERZYN S.A. have signed a letter of intent to cooperate in realising the "Odra river Hydrogen Transport Route" programme.

– This is our next step towards sustainable production and transformation. Delivering our strategic objectives requires coordinated action on many levels, many of which require collaboration. I am convinced that the knowledge and experience of all the partners in this agreement guarantee our effectiveness and success – said Mateusz Wodejko, vice-president for finance of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.

The cooperation includes, among other things, the exchange of information and experience, as well as activities relating to the preparation of concepts for the implementation of projects concerning the construction of a multimodal transport hub. The projects involve work on the concept of building a logistics and distribution centre for the products of the partners of the letter of intent along with a transhipment terminal based on water transport.

All parties declared their interest in using the terminal's infrastructure and services in the future. They anticipate that the launch of the new terminal will expand the range of goods whose logistics will be based on intermodal cargo, which will optimise the costs of these operations.

The use of intermodal transport is part of the global trend towards the development of modern logistics solutions. Increasing the share of inland transport corresponds to the expectation of using green technologies. Cooperation between KGHM, KGHM Metraco and Grupa Azoty ZAK S.A. will facilitate the implementation of objectives arising from development strategies and international agreements on energy transition and sustainable transport. It also responds to trends in the transport market. It results from the desire to reduce pollution and improve air quality.

As part of the cooperation, the companies will appoint substantive teams and strive for the Odra Waterway to obtain the status of an international waterway along its entire route and to include the City of Głogów as a node of the TEN-T network.
