Tomasz Zdzikot, the CEO of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., handed over symbolic checks to the local governments at KGHM’s main office in Lubin.
“KGHM supports local communities in many ways. Local governments’ budgets receive money from the taxes we pay, we sponsor local initiatives and sports clubs, and we conclude agreements and cooperate with the communes and municipalities where we operate. Together we take care of the development of the Copper Belt and the high quality of life of its residents,” said Tomasz Zdzikot.
Money for pro-social projects was provided to the communes and municipalities of Jerzmanowa, Przemków, Grębocice, Jerzmanowa, Kotla, Żukowice, Gaworzyce, Pęcław, Rudna, and Radwanice, as well as to the cities of Głogów, Legnica, Lubin, and Polkowice. The donations have ranged from 100 to 350 thousand zlotys.
KGHM has been making special earmarked donations to local governments since 2020. Nearly 13.5 million zlotys in total has already gone to various localities in the Copper Belt.
“We can use the donated funds for so-called soft investments: additional equipment for clinics, playgrounds, and community centers, as well as for supporting health promotion programs. In our budgets it would be difficult to set aside such funds, so we are very grateful for such cooperation and dialogue,” said Jacek Szwagrzyk, the head of the Gaworzyce Commune.
Thanks to the support from KGHM, examinations and consultations will be carried out at the diabetology and pulmonology clinics in Głogów. In Grębocice, the residents will be able to benefit from rehabilitation and visits to a cardiologist and a laryngologist. The Kotla commune will equip and develop village community premises, playgrounds, and sports fields. Thermal modernization of the elementary school buildings in Białołęka will be carried out by the Pęcław commune.
Other projects important to the public will be carried out in the areas of health, education, and culture in the Copper Belt. Polkowice will buy an ultrasound scanner to broaden the scope of the diagnosis of urinary tract diseases. Legnica will continue the campaign carried out as part of the “Healthy Legnica” program, while the municipality of Lubin will conduct, among other things, training courses in chess and additional sports activities for schoolchildren.
Besides the donations, huge support for the Copper Belt region’s local governments is also provided by the taxes paid by KGHM. In 2022 it was more than 300 million zlotys. Also, the amount of property tax was more than 230 million zlotys. In addition, municipalities receive millions of zlotys in support arising from agreements concerning new investment projects in the region.
Local government projects are also implemented with support from the KGHM Foundation. In addition to organizing cultural events and buying healthcare and hospital equipment, the money supported local units of volunteer fire departments and renovation of churches and other historical buildings in the region.
