KGHM Cyber Challenge 2023 - the company organized a cyber training field for state-owned companies

Monday, 02 October, 2023
Virtual workshops on online threats, sharing experiences, and building communication in teams - another edition of the Cyber Challenge 2023, organized by KGHM, is behind us. The workshop was attended by employees from departments or divisions responsible for cyber security at state-owned companies that are members of the ISAC-GIG member and companies from the energy sector.

ISAC-GIG is the Information-Sharing and Analysis Center for the mining sector. This year, the event was also attended by representatives of the Command of the Cyberspace Defense Forces Component.

KGHM Cyber Challenge 2023 is a workshop aimed at enhancing cyber security skills and building communication between the various teams. Its goal was to prepare the participants for cyber threats by allowing them to experience an attack in a controlled cyber training field environment.

“Cyber security is a key topic in a world where evolving technologies and the Internet play an important role in our daily lives, but also increasingly affect the operation of key businesses. KGHM is one of the world’s leaders in the mining industry, but it also faces increasingly sophisticated cyber attacks. We know that cyber security is no longer a matter of just good safeguards, but also of the awareness and involvement of employees,” said Tomasz Zdzikot, the CEO of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., during the event.

“The cyber training field allows competition between teams, while being organized in an interesting form of an active workshop. What sets us apart from other such workshops is that we address the issue of cyber security in industrial automation. I hope that the KGHM Cyber Challenge will become a permanent item in the calendar of cyber events,” added Adam Piotrowski, the general manager of KGHM’s Central Information Processing Center division, which organized the training.

Virtual environments defended by the different teams and attack scenarios were prepared for the participants, which required a quick response and decisions crucial to the organizations concerned. The training provided an opportunity to apply the participants’ experiences and to learn new solutions. The following teams were the winners:

  1. ENEA S.A.
  2. Jastrzębska Spółka Węglowa S.A.
  3. Lubelski Węgiel “Bogdanka” S.A.

The event was held under the honorary patronage of the Ministry of State Assets and the Central Mining Institute - State Research Institute.
