Modern computer stations for analysis using artificial intelligence methods - the company has funded the equipment and became the sponsor of the KGHM Analytical Laboratory at the University of Zielona Góra. The laboratory is located in the newly constructed building of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and Physics.

Thanks to the support received from KGHM, the KGHM Analytical Laboratory has been equipped with modern and high-performance computer stations designed to perform extensive analysis of large data sets and build models and systems using artificial intelligence methods.

“Relations with the scientific community are very important for KGHM. By participating in research programs, we have a direct impact on the effectiveness of the activities carried out. Thanks to the highly specialized computers with which we have equipped the laboratory, innovative solutions will be created for application in the industrial sector, including in our sector,” said Tomasz Zdzikot, the CEO of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., at the opening of the laboratory.

The CEO of KGHM added that taking advantage of the opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and machine learning is crucial for the company, which is a global leader in the mining industry.

“Thanks to the involvement in joint activities of companies such as KGHM, the University of Zielona Góra is able to continuously develop and expand its offer for students, residents, and businesses of the entire Lubuskie Province alike, said Prof. Wojciech Strzyżewski, the rector of the University of Zielona Góra.

Prof. Justyna Patalas-Maliszewska, the Director of the Institute of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Zielona Góra, emphasizes that the joint activities of KGHM and the University are an important step in the implementation of the Industry 4.0 concept in the Lubuskie Province.”

Starting in October, the KGHM Analytical Laboratory will be used by students of such majors as production management and engineering, and electronic business. The laboratory will be available to more than 100 students per semester.

In particular, the computers will be used for analyzing large data sets (Big Data), building predictive models using artificial intelligence methods, modeling and simulating processes, designing digital models for building digital twins, and using virtual and augmented reality for analyzing, modeling, and simulating processes.

Both KGHM and the largest university of the Lubuskie Province are focusing on the development of modern technologies related to the industry of the future, information technology development, data processing, and knowledge management. Thanks to the cooperation, KGHM employees and the scientific staff of the University of Zielona Góra will support each other and learn from each other’s experience.

The event was attended by members of the parliament, local and regional government officials from the Lubuskie Province, representatives of the Management Board of KGHM Polska Miedź S.A., as well as representatives of the University of Zielona Góra, along with professors and students of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

KGHM has been cooperating with the University of Zielona Góra since 2022. At that time, the University was a Partner of the Copper Valley Technology Conference and the 2nd and 3rd editions of the CuValley Hack hackathon. The events were organized by KGHM Centrum Analityki and KGHM Polska Miedź S.A.

The new laboratory building is the result of a project implemented since 2019 by the Institute of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute of Physics of the University of Zielona Góra, funded by the Ministry of Education and Science, within the framework of the Regional Excellence Initiative (REI) program. The construction of the building was financed with funds from the University of Zielona Góra.
