The “Volunteer of the Year 2023” statuette was presented to Jan Demczak by KGHM’s Deputy CEO Mirosław Kidoń, who emphasized that the management board had decided “to award a person who stands out for his pro-social attitude.”
“Jan Demczak is a person who not only engages in volunteer activities, but is a true leader who builds around him a community of people ready to help and do good things,” said Mirosław Kidoń.
Through years of selfless volunteerism, Jan Demczak has gathered around him a dedicated group of employees who, like him, devote their free time and are committed to spreading knowledge about the history of the Copper Belt, the discovery of copper deposits there, and the mining traditions. In the form of a game, they also impart knowledge to students of Copper Belt’s schools about the nature of the work of ore dressers.
“Thank you for this award, which I receive not only for myself. This is a reward for my entire team. Thirty people without whom I would not have been able to carry out all the initiatives,” said Jan Demczak.
KGHM’s Volunteer of the Year is the author and originator of such educational programs as “Saint Barbara,” “In the footsteps of Jaś Wyżykowski,” “KGHM in a funny way,” and “KGHM for Children.” He also takes care of the wards of the Bajka Orphanage in Lubin. He takes special care of the disabled persons from the School and Educational Center in Lubin. To integrate children from two different facilities, he and his team held a special Integration Sports Olympics, helped move to the new center, and together with the children planted trees and shrubs to make the new place more welcoming.
KGHM supports employee volunteerism and engages in initiatives concerning the company as well as the region’s residents. The Copper Belt is not only a place where the company mines the treasures of the earth, but first and foremost a community of people who are reliable and dedicated to the most important values.
A summary of last year’s KGHM projects, campaigns, and activities can be found in the recently published brochure “Good CSR Practices of KGHM.” In total, more than 2,500 volunteers were involved in all activities. The publication contains a description of the company’s good practices grouped into various categories, including education, social ties, environmental protection, and physical health.
