A record number of more than 500 works by 289 artists from 45 countries were submitted to the International Goldsmithing Art Competition organised by the Legnica Art Gallery as part of the SILVER Festival. KGHM has been a reliable partner of the event for many years. The company donates 5 kg of silver granules as prizes for the winners of the competition.

This year’s competition is dedicated to designers and creators of artistic jewellery. It promotes creative explorations within artistic jewellery. The challenge of the current edition was creative reflection on the issue of EMPATHY. 289 artists from all over the world competed, submitting more than 500 works.

The Legnica SILVER Festival has been supported by KGHM (by donating 5 kg of silver for the winners of the event) and the KGHM Foundation (by supporting the organisation of the Festival since 2009) for many years.

To illustrate the significance of the award from the company, it can be said that a goldsmith can make, for example, 1,000 wedding rings, 500 pairs of earrings or 250 bracelets from 5 kg of silver.

KGHM is one of the largest producers of metallic silver. Silver is produced at the Głogów Smelter and Refinery as a by-product from anode slime in the electrolytic refining of copper.

The company produces around 1,200 tonnes of this valuable metal annually. In 2022, the KGHM Group’s silver production reached 1,327 tonnes. Silver production data for 2023 will be available as early as on 27 March following the publication of the KGHM Group’s Annual Report 2023.

Silver at KGHM is produced in the form of bars (pigs) weighing 1,000 jewellery ounces (32.15 kg) and in the form of granules. Silver is supplied in the form of granules to plants that produce materials for jewellery and metal works that manufacture silver-containing alloys. Silver in the form of pigs (bars) goes mainly to financial institutions.

Due to its unique physical properties, silver is used in jewellery, electronics, electrical engineering, medicine, optics, energy production, and many other sectors. It also has applications in cutting-edge technologies, including in infrastructure, the automotive industry, and photovoltaics.

The Legnica SILVER Festival has been organised by the Art Gallery in Legnica since 1979. This is one of the largest exhibition events in Europe that present artistic activities within the field of broadly defined contemporary jewellery. The aim of the festival is to present, promote and document the latest and most interesting phenomena in the field of artistic jewellery. Each year, the event includes an International Goldsmithing Art Competition, as well as numerous exhibitions showcasing the work of designers and artistic jewellery makers from around the world.
